Nha Trang

Also to be known as 'The City of Thieves'...

We arrived in Nha Trang in the early hours of the morning (well, 6am, which is pretty early in these non working days!) I won't say the journey was fun - compared to the last couple of buses we've taken here it was pretty uncomfortable - we seemed to be landed with no foot room or elbow room at all, and sleep was a challenge. Still, we made it and after a bit of wandering found ourselves somewhere to stay. The rest of the day consisted of a big breakfast with Amy and James (who had arrived a day earlier), a sandcastle making competition, relaxation on the beach and a few drink that evening. Amy and I definitely won the competition with our Rapunzel themed creation- once Kev had spent hours making theirs 'structurally sound' (you can tell he was a builder..) they got bored.
The evening was a lot of fun, until Kev sadly misplaced his lovely tailor-made flat cap and someone helped themselves to the contents of his wallet. Luckily we'd taken the precaution of leaving cards at home so not too disastrous. A couple of days later another kind local helped himself to Kev's shirt whilst we were swimming - we were about 2 metres away and saw him take it but he ran too fast for us. It's not surprising Nha Trang is known for it's thieves. After this we were VERY cautious with our belongings. Even our clothes.
The most exciting part of the Nha Trang trip for me was learning to dive. It took 3 days to get my open water qualification and during that time I learnt the theory as well as doing 6 dives. I picked it up quickly, and was able to enjoy the underwater scenery without too much time spent practicing skills. I've definitely caught the bug - after 3 days I just didn't want to stop! We saw some fascinating things, and the sense of peacefulness and calm under the water is unbelievable. Hopefully we'll be able to do a lot more diving as the trip progresses.
Other than that, we spent time on the beach and enjoying the restaurants and bars - a relaxing week with Amy and James and a chance to top up our tans a little. We are now in Saigon and having spent the afternoon at the war remnants museum have a lot to think about. Hopefully by the next entry I'll be able to express how it made me feel, for now I'll just say it was the quietest museum I think I've every visited.
